I've been using the Felt bike for the past 10 days, the wind and threatening skies have made me cycle a more sheltered route, usually through woods, devoid of traffic, to Thornton Reservoir. This picture was taken in Martinshaw Wood only a few hundred yards from home, fairly early in the morning I have the woods to myself. Martinshaw is ancient woodland but early last century, was completely cleared of trees and replanted with a mix of conifers and deciduous. Since it's aquisition by the Woodland Trust some 25 years ago, many of the conifers have been removed, those remaining act as windbreaks. Martinshaw Wood forms part of the new National Forest.
Further along the route, part of Sustrans Cycle Route 63, the newly planted and named, Pear Tree Wood, also belonging to the Woodland Trust.
Thornton Reservoir (PDF) is drying up rapidly, this feeder pool has shrank to an all time low over the last few days. This morning, large fish were unable to submerge completely in the last puddle of water.
Now a moan.
The National Forest covers more than 200 sq miles. Why the do dog owners allow their pets to crap all over the footpaths and cycle tracks? In some places dog excrement lies on the ground like a carpet, impossible to avoid on a bike and I'm getting pee'd off with getting dog crap in my tyres everyday (3 times today). You know, some owners go to the trouble of picking up the crap in a bag only to drop the bag at the side of the path where it stays for perpetuity. If that's the best they can do then what chance have we got?
