I took these pictures of the old blacksmith's building a couple of years ago. It has now crumbled further, see Hazel's photo. As a small boy I can remember the blacksmith working here. The building was originally a cruck frame, the roof was more likely to have been slate, could have been thatch. I can remember the tin roof going on but can't remember what was there before, too young to have an interest.
The blacksmith lived in a cottage at the back, to the left, I think it was semi-detached, my gran was thinking of renting it at one time and we had a look round. Opposite the house the blacksmith had an outbuilding where he kept rabbits, all kinds of rabbits, in small cages. It was a big hobby among the men of Glenfield to keep and show rabbits.
After the demise of the blacksmith, the building was used as a store, a local builder used it for a number of years and it was he, I suppose, who in-filled the gable ends with brick. Not really the proper solution as the original woodwork would have tied the building together.
And, I'd be interested in any old pictures of Glenfield.
The school on Kirby Lane,
The terrace of cottages in the square which housed Stockley's Sweet Shop.
The slate and granite building which stood next to the butcher's and housed the Post Office and the village cobbler.A picture of The Square before it's first (1954) revamp. The list is endless.
